Basalt is positioned near two Gold Medal fishing rivers, keeping fly fishing enthusiasts interested every season of the year. The Fryingpan River, which is considered a must for anyone fly fishing in Colorado, is known for Rainbow, Brook, and Brown trout. The Roaring Fork River, a tributary of the Colorado River, spans approximately 70 miles and is located just one mile from our hotel.
After spending a day on the river, take advantage of our location in Willits Town Center, and enjoy the local shops and restaurants, including a Whole Foods, just steps away from your room. Adventure over to Historic Downtown Basalt for more great local dining options, easily accessible by bus or bike. For those travelers looking for a leisure ride, Element Basalt offers a Bikes to Borrow program, where you can take out road bikes and a helmet free of charge to tour the town. If adrenaline-inducing mountain rides are more your speed, enjoy the miles of world-class mountain biking in the Aspen Snowmass area. Four Mountain Sports, located in Element Basalt, offers one-way bike rentals between their nearby locations free of charge to guests.
Hikers from across the globe are drawn to our local hiking trails. If you're unsure which path is best for you feel free to ask the front desk for suggestions, and we'll be happy to give directions to our favorite spots. Element Basalt is an easy drive away from the base of Sopris, where you can hike to the breathtaking Thomas Lakes. Head up the Arbaney Kittle Trailhead, and take in the panoramic views of the Roaring Fork Valley, or access the Mushroom Rock/Red Hill trails for phenomenal views of Sopris and Carbondale.
Take our regional bus system up to Aspen and Snowmass, and expand your hiking options into the Upper Roaring Fork Valley. The Rio Grande Trail, extending 42-mile traverse from Aspen to Glenwood Springs, is a great option for a more leisurely stroll,. The trail winds next to the Roaring Fork River for majority of the journey with amazing views of the mountains and even an occasional glimpse of a bald eagle.
