The best places to collect your thoughts just outside New York City
Read our Showtime® Inspired City Guide to Brooklyn
Writers get blocked. Artists lose their muse. Everyone in between just needs a break sometimes. When daydreaming takes over your days, it’s time to step away, put the pencils down, and find a new center. This is what weekend getaways were made for!
These 48-hour recesses can recharge our batteries and send us back to work, relationships, parenting, and the other strife-filled moments of life with a clear head and fresh perspective. It’s just the kind of inspired time away the couples on the SHOWTIME Original Series The Affair could use – a weekend getting lost in Brooklyn unearthing new sources of peace, inspiration, and light-hearted fun. Let us be your guide to new music, bike rides, poetry, wine, and even chocolate experiences at some of these hidden gems just outside the hustle of New York City. When it’s time to retreat to your room, tune-in to The Affair on Showtime.
It’s dinner and a show at St. Mazie, Brooklyn’s spin on a NOLA jazz club. Hot music every night and exceptional oyster and bourbon specials make this an exciting place to stay out too late with your main squeeze. Or take in the Big Easy inspiration a little easier during their Sunday brunch.
Explore the city on two wheels with a Citi Bike day pass. For just $10 you can borrow the bikes 30 minutes at a time, which is plenty to get you to and from each destination. Then, check-out the bike again to move to your next stop. With that price and flexibility, you and your partner can cruise Brooklyn all day long. You’ll cover more ground than by foot and really be able to take in the city.
Go get lost in the flora at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped outside of the city as you meander around the intoxicating air and the exquisite floral scenes. Picnics, cocktails, reading, writing, and even naps are welcome ways to enjoy these pristine gardens.
A great bartender may be better than a good therapist, which is what you’ll find when you hide out at Park Slope’s Brookvin. Not far from the Gardens, here you can relax with a superb glass of vino from their substantial wine list while you sip and savor the moment.
There may be no better place to collect your thoughts and exit the real world than at one of Brooklyn’s many parks. Prospect Park is a can’t-miss destination. Make a date with you and the road for a run, cruise the generous bike lanes, or settle in on a bench or blanket in this picturesque center of Brooklyn.
A book can take you away unlike any other experience, which is especially true at Berl’s Brooklyn Poetry Shop. It’s the only bookstore in NYC that is specific to poetry. Find deeper meaning in the splendid language and stories in these carefully curated poetry selections.
The child inside us all makes easiest excuse for bailing on reality for a little while. A short walk from the poetry shop is Jane’s Carousel, the spot for a breezy ride with an unmatched view of the East River, Manhattan, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The 100-year-old exquisitely carved carousel will give you plenty of time to ponder what’s next for your own wild ride.
Junior’s is a Brooklyn establishment enjoyed for decades, just a four-minute walk from Sheraton Brooklyn. Hailed as having the best slices of cheesecake in the city, the lunch counter also serves up greasy-spoon classics like pastrami sandwiches, steakburgers, and big pancake and egg breakfasts. Slide into a booth with your partner for easy conversation and easier grub.
A peaceful, solemn scene where you can reconnect with yourself and those who’ve walked these twisted roads before us is no further than Brooklyn’s famed Green-Wood Cemetery. Built in 1838 and styled after rural European cemeteries, this national historic landmark is called the “most magnificent 478 acres in New York City.” Storied monk parrots fill the trees while the grand architecture will give you something beautiful to focus on.
The peace that comes from a nice hot soak is as close as the Sheraton Brooklyn’s second floor, where you can gain access to the private jacuzzi. The ambiance is comfortable, relaxing, and just the place to get away when you don’t want to go too far. The retractable solarium roof makes this a unique jacuzzi experience on your own or with your partner.
When all else fails, you can dive into an indulgent treat. Tuck into The Chocolate Room in Cobble Hill for a rich slice of chocolate cake, decadent glass of wine, and only your most intimate thoughts for company.
