Fine art photographer Gray Malin is on a mission to make every day your deserved getaway. In this Q&A the Dallas native dishes on his favorite Big D watering holes, brunch and music spots and everything else he loves about his hometown.
Q: It’s Friday late afternoon. A long work week is just about over. What’s the perfect place to go to unwind with a cocktail?
A: I love the art deco spirit of Le Méridien Dallas, The Stoneleigh. Unwinding at the bar is a great spot to start the weekend after a long week.
A. An ideal Saturday would be a workout at Flywheel and then brunch with friends at Komali. In the afternoon I would get my adventure on with a visit to the rainforest at the Dallas World Aquarium and the new Perot Science Museum. At night a frozen margarita and crispy tex-mex at MiCocina in Highland Park Village before a concert at the American Airlines Center.
A. Not sure it's so much of a secret anymore, but I love spending a Saturday in Oak Cliff's Bishop Arts District. There are so many great eateries and galleries to browse. I especially love Hattie's for brunch. It's southern/soul food in an upscale bistro setting. They make an amazing Bloody Mary.
A. You cannot beat a relaxed afternoon window shopping in Highland Park Village, the oldest outdoor shopping center in America. You could describe it as Dallas's "Rodeo Drive" but it's more than a shopping experience. It's the center of the Dallas social scene, and it carries a traditional charm you can't find anywhere else in the country.
A: My perfect Friday night is eating great tex-mex at MiCocina in Highland Park Village. While you're waiting for a table, head upstairs to the Monkey Bar for a "Mambo Taxi" margarita.
A. Savor Restaurant at Klyde Warren Park. You can sit outside with your dog and enjoy the beauty of the arts district alongside a Bloody Mary.
A. I love to go to the Nasher Sculpture Center and have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee on the patio of the cafe.
A. Always memorable.
A. Shopping bags.
A. Klyde Warren Park has great outdoor music that's free to the public. Couldn't be a better spot.
A. The Katy Trail is an amazing running and biking path that winds through uptown and offers a fresh perspective on this blossoming city.
A. Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars.
