Boston's 5 most Insta-worthy spots

Calling all history buffs: Instagram your way through Boston’s most iconic sights from dawn until dusk.

From cobbled streets to shaded trees, there's no shortage of scenic backdrops in this historic city, so don’t limit your excursions to indoor attractions only. Whether snapping a selfie with friends or creating a virtual keepsake, here are five of the city’s most Insta-worthy spots. Don't be camera shy!

1. STRIKE A POSE ON ACORN STREET

People have been flocking to Acorn Street for years and commemorating all types of occasions, from romantic proposals to impromptu photo shoots among friends.

Located in the exclusive Beacon Hill neighborhood, the cobbled road is incredibly photogenic, with its brick buildings, colorful flags and window boxes in the background. Coupled with the neighborhood’s Federal-style row houses and gas-lit lanterns, it makes for quite the photo. While definitely a popular spot for Instagrammers, Acorn Street isn’t the easiest to walk down, so consider swapping your high heels for flats.

2. SMILE FOR A SELFIE IN HARVARD SQUARE

While technically in Cambridge, Harvard Square is one of the most iconic spots in the Boston area—and for good reason. The triangular plaza lies at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, Brattle Street and John F. Kennedy Street, with galleries and restaurants within walking distance. Snap a few selfies in the morning light and when the sun becomes too bright, migrate over to the nearby souvenir shops.

As for the university itself, Harvard dates back to 1636 and despite modern amenities inside, the building facades appear frozen in time. With towering trees hovering overhead and quaint paths set between pristine lawns, this is the perfect photo-op for any history buff.

3. BOOMERANG THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

Similar in architectural style to the New York Public Library, Boston’s version is just as impressive.

Upon its opening in 1895, many proclaimed the Boston Public Library as a “palace for the people,” which is still true today. As one of the largest libraries in the country, you’ll find plenty of Insta-worthy spots in the majestic Bates Hall—think barrel-arched ceilings and English oak bookcases—and in the outdoor courtyard. Among the library’s 23 million items are rare books, manuscripts and first edition folios by Williams Shakespeare himself.

Should you fancy a quick bite, stop for tea and treats at the Courtyard Restaurant inside the library.

4. CELEBRATE THE DETAILS AT THE ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM

While the Museum of Fine Art tends to get more praise from tourists, don’t underestimate the aesthetic beauty of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Located in the Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood, the museum also hosts live musical performances throughout the year. As for the architecture, it’s stunning from stone to stone. Tiled walls and vibrant flowers give the quiet courtyard a whimsical vibe, and if you get there on the early side, you’re likely to feel in a world of your own.

The courtyard is the most Insta-worthy, but make sure to spend some time perusing the art galleries, too. Artwork ranges from historic to more contemporary pieces.

5. TAKE A PANORAMIC ALONG THE CHARLES RIVER ESPLANADE

No trip to Boston is complete without a visit to the Charles River Esplanade.

While modern renovations have made the area more pedestrian-friendly, there’s still a lot of history attached to the Esplanade. For one, it was originally called the Boston Embankment back in 1910 and then, in 1928, expansions began. Today, the river path is well paved, with recreation at every corner. From the river path, you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the city, complete with public parks, lush landscape, and come fall, colorful foliage. The "golden hour" when the sun goes down is a perfect time to stop by, especially for portrait photography and nature shots.
